problem & possible solution (fireplace)

I am rockin some 80's brick in the new house. I also have an issue with the random bilt in. My plan is to tear out the fireplace brick and tile in a sleek mid centry modern way OR just white was the existing brick. I am 100% goind to put a door over the shelving and build the wall to be nice and flush.

        Here is the room now with the current owner still in.

Idea #1 rip out and tile??
